Privacy Policy

This policy explains what SmokePDF (smokepdf.com) collects when you use it, why, who collects it, how long it is kept, and the choices you have. We wrote it in plain language so you know exactly what happens to your data.

1. Your files are not uploaded to our servers

All SmokePDF tools process files inside your browser, on your device. When you select a file, your browser reads it, processes it and creates the result in memory, and then you download it. The content and names of your files are not sent to our servers, and we neither see nor store them. When you close the page, the files are cleared from the browser's memory.

You can check this yourself: once a tool page has loaded, disconnect from the internet and run the operation; it still works. We explain how in How In-Browser PDF Processing Works.

Some tools load software libraries from public distribution servers (cdnjs.cloudflare.com and cdn.jsdelivr.net) when the page opens or when the tool is used. These requests fetch code only and do not send your files. As with any request on the internet, those servers receive your IP address and browser information.

2. What we record about visits (SmokePDF analytics)

We run our own analytics system to see which tools are used and where they fail, so we can improve them. When you use the site, the following events are recorded:

  • The page you opened, the tool you used, whether processing succeeded or failed, and the number and total size of files (not their names or content).
  • Device type (desktop, phone, tablet), browser, operating system and site language.
  • Country, derived by the hosting server without storing your IP address. Your IP address is used momentarily, in an irreversibly hashed form, only to prevent request flooding.
  • A random visitor ID stored in your browser's local storage (localStorage) and a session ID stored in session storage (sessionStorage). These are random numbers that carry no information about you; we use them to count visitors and sessions.

Retention: this data is deleted automatically after 90 days.

How to prevent it: clear this site's data in your browser settings to delete the ID, use private browsing, or use a tracker-blocking extension.

3. Google Analytics

We use Google Analytics (by Google LLC) to measure visits and where they come from. Google Analytics sets cookies in your browser and collects information such as the pages you visit, visit duration, device type and approximate location. Google processes this data under the Google Privacy Policy.

For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, Google Analytics and Google AdSense cookies are not enabled until you consent through the consent message shown on your first visit. You can also block Google Analytics on all websites with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

4. Advertising and cookies (Google AdSense)

SmokePDF shows ads through Google AdSense to cover the cost of running the site and keep the tools free.

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to users based on their visit to this site and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can opt out of other third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at www.aboutads.info.
  • Other ad networks certified by Google may also serve ads on this site. How they use data is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services.

If you opt out of personalized ads, or you are in a region that requires consent and have not given it, you may see non-personalized ads based only on the page content.

5. What we don't collect

  • We don't require an account, and we don't collect your name, phone number or address.
  • We don't collect payment information; all tools are free.
  • We don't sell or rent data to anyone.

6. When you email us

If you email us, we keep your message and email address to reply and follow up on your request, and delete them when they're no longer needed, within 12 months at most. The same applies to what you send through the contact form: your name, email and message pass through the site’s server on their way to our inbox, support@smokepdf.com, and are not stored on the server itself. To stop spam, the number of messages sent from each IP address in an hour is counted in a hashed form that does not reveal the address, and the count is deleted automatically.

7. Your rights

You can ask us what data relates to you, or ask us to correct or delete it, or object to its processing. Because our analytics are not linked to your identity, the easiest way to delete your data is to clear this site's data in your browser. For any other request, email us and we'll reply within 30 days. You also have the right to complain to the data protection authority in your country; in Morocco, that is the CNDP (Commission Nationale de contrôle de la protection des Données à caractère Personnel).

8. Children

The site is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect data about them.

9. Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we'll publish the new version on this page and update the "Last updated" date at the top.
